In Ten Books on Architecture (30–15 BCE), the Roman architect Vitruvius writes about the ancient Greek palaestra, a public wrestling school that consisted of an open-air rectangular court surrounded by colonnades. Though it was traditionally used for wrestling and other sporting events, the palaestra also served as a place for socialization and debate. “In the three colonnades construct roomy recesses with seats in them,” he advises, “where philosophers, rhetoricians, and others who delight in learning may sit and converse.”
